Welcome to Kitty & Lorena's blogs for Spain 2019! We'll be flying out of Asheville tomorrow afternoon to Atlanta. From there we change Friday morning in Charles de Gaulle before arriving in Barcelona about noon. Given the time change, it will be a couple of days before we get that first post out. This year we will extend our usual two weeks in Barcelona with an additional two weeks in Valencia, and will be traveling until late February.

This trip marks our seventh trip to Barcelona (BCN). We can't get enough of this city! You can see by the Google Map below how much we've already done (stars) as well as places we hope to visit this time (green marks).

Kitty and I will share the writing and I'll be taking the bulk of the photos. Note there is a sidebar where you can subscribe to our blog and get direct email notifications. We write this blog for friends and family who are interested what we're up to, but also to friends who may want to travel to these cities someday. With those folks in mind, we'll include some travel advice, such as links to our favorite restaurants recommendations and other useful sites.

Last Day Valencia, Reprieve Barcelona

It's our last day in Valencia. We are awakened by a text on my i-phone informing us that our flight from Amsterdam to Atlanta has been cancelled. We move into action and quickly rebook for Monday and communicate with our Asheville folks about the change of plans. We manage that before coffee. We buy more money for our cell phone, refurbish TP and PT supplies, and then retreat back into the apartment to recover from the shock of having to be responsible after 4 weeks of fecklessness. I work on the blog while Kitty finishes her Paul Theroux novel. We set out about 2:00 for a recommended neighborhood for restaurants. We had walked through this area the other day and there is a dizzying array of restaurant possibilities. We play the game of walking around the block. I spy a cider joint and Kitty a place that has coquettes. We try the latter, only to discover their fryer is out of order. Mossen Costs i Llobera Gardens, Poble Sec

Barcelona is full of lovely gardens and some of the best are on Montjuïc. I had seen photos of a cactus garden on the side of the mountain. It's named for a Catalan poet, Miquel Costa i Llobera. We took the bus down to Paral-lel and then walked about 1/2 hour up the steep mountainside.  View on the way up It’s not as bad as it might be. There are seemingly thousands of morning doves cooing in a chorus and sounding unlike anything I’d heard. As you walk up the steps, at every turn there a terrace with a lovely view of the harbor and the city, with the occasional red gondola coming up from the waterfront. The bird song competes with the sound of giant cruise ships engines throbbing below.  Although the morning was cool, we warm as we climb and the sun brightens.  View from Cactus Garden The garden is beautiful. February 2 2019 I wake up craving kale of all things. This inspires our first true outing here to the Central Market. It's Saturday and the crowds are out. As described, our apartment is off the beaten track on a quiet street, yet major sights are close by. I'm surprised how close things are--much more so than I'd imagined. Mercat Central I had thought the Central Market too far to be practical for our everyday shopping, but found it instead to be an easy ten-minute walk away. The walk itself takes us through lovely squares and pedestrian zones. I try to just absorb the city and not take tons of photos, but my resolve wears thin about half-way through the market.  The building is spectacular. It wears its age well. We watch an eel or two meet their end. One makes a bold attempt at escape when it jumps from a bowl and slithers away, but the fishmonger is quick with his knife, grabs it and has it decapitated in a flash.
