A Walk in the Park
Saturday, Feb 10
It's a beautiful day, so we set out in the morning to walk in the Turia. Not surprisingly, it's full of people. Many are on bikes and jogging. Someone described it as an outdoor gym, and that description fits. We sit by a pond and eat our late-morning sandwiches. One young man delights his friends by sprinting naked around a small garden. Kitty serves as witness to the moment while I photograph orange trees.
Kitty has a sit at a dog park. The futuristic City of Arts and Sciences begins to come into view. They have an amazing children's slide park that is fashioned from a plastic Gulliver and transforms the kids (and some of their parents) into Lilliputians. Once again, we fret and assume injury is imminent as the children are so wild and excited and not particularly good at taking turns with the giant slides. We note two medical staff waiting in the wings.
We've walked about 2 hours before we get to the City of Arts and Sciences. It looks a bit down in the mouth with slime-filled stagnant ponds that at one point may have been fountains and a rose garden that has seen better days. We have no energy to conquer the space even though it's one of the most photographed places in town, and head back into the city in search of coffee. We find a non-assuming cafe where they are scooping out Paella into "to go" portions. We have coffee and some cookies and watch the steady flow of customers served by the (apparent) husband and wife team.
We walk through the town's "Eixample" or extension section where the design recalls Barcelona. Back home we are worn out and even though we had intended to go out to dinner, we can't quite rouse. At midnight there are fireworks. I vow to get up early to catch another early Sunday for photos and hope Kitty might be persuaded to join me.
